J&J Requests Disclosure Of Third Party Litigation Financing In Talcum Powder Lawsuit

November 30, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent report by HarrisMartin Publishing indicating that Johnson & Johnson has requested all third party litigation funding companies be disclosed.

The report states that Johnson & Johnson has asked a federal judge presiding over talcum powder cases to require plaintiffs to disclose “whether any third parties — including litigation funding companies — have a contingent monetary interest in the outcome of the cases.” It was included in a Nov. 28 response to a joint application for appointment of the plaintiffs’ steering committee.

Several plaintiffs have already been awarded millions of dollars in compensation and lawsuit numbers are continuing to grow. These suits against companies such as Johnson & Johnson allege that their talcum powder products are directly linked to the development of ovarian cancer. In many cases, plaintiffs have claimed that they or a loved one used Johnson & Johnson powder as a feminine hygiene product and later developed the deadly disease. Most of the filed cases are pending in a Missouri federal court, while others have been filed in New Jersey, where Johnson & Johnson is headquartered.

As scientists continue to study the disease, numerous studies over the course of 45 years have found that women who use baby powder as a feminine hygiene product are more likely to develop ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has maintained denial in these claims and has previously stated that there is no link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer.
