Johnson & Johnson To Pay $120 Million For Mesh Lawsuit

April 06, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent article by The Parent Herald stating that Johnson & Johnson has now agreed to pay $120 million to compensate for damages of 2,000 to 3,000 women who say they were affected by the manufacturer’s transvaginal mesh product.

According to the article, some women in the suit have claimed to suffer from intense pain, while some had suffered other serious adverse side effects such as organ failure. Plaintiffs in similar cases have alleged that the product, manufactured by several companies including C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, Coloplast Corp and Cook Medical, caused them adverse side effects about which, they claim, companies did not adequately warn them.

Frequently reported side effects of the device include erosion through the vagina, organ perforation, vaginal scarring, vaginal shrinkage, bleeding, infection, severe pelvic or vaginal pain, inability to engage in sexual intercourse, need for revision surgery, mesh contraction, urinary problems, recurring prolapse and neuro-muscular problems.

The device was approved by the FDA in 1996 for use in stress urinary incontinence surgeries and then again in 2001 for treatment of pelvic organ prolapse. Since then, the FDA has also issued warnings about the devices indicating to consumers that complications from using the mesh are not uncommon.

Cases involving transvaginal mesh are expected to continue growing in number. As those cases accumulate, attorneys at Banville Law are working to make sure that those who believe they have been negatively affected by a transvaginal mesh implant are given the important opportunity to explore their legal rights. Certain individuals may be entitled to legal action and financial compensation. Banville Law is currently offering free case evaluations for those parties.
