Jury Decision In Fourth Trial For Baby Powder Cancer Lawsuits
March 27, 2017 – – In the fourth of five Missouri lawsuits against pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson, the jury has returned a verdict in favor of the defendant. Over the past few years, multiple baby powder cancer lawsuits have been filed against the pharmaceutical firm. The fourth in a series of five lawsuits heard in Missouri’s Circuit Court recently ended with the jury siding with Johnson & Johnson.
“The jury decided that the company did in no way contribute to the ovarian cancer developed by the plaintiff in this particular case,” says a spokesperson for online talc powder cancer resource site www.talcumpowder.org. “Of course this is one of five, and it should be noted that the first three cases were decided in favor of the plaintiffs.”
The representative says that this verdict should in no way impede the filing of additional cases. Cases against Johnson & Johnson have been piling up for the past couple of years and to date, thousands have been filed, settled, or are awaiting trial. Three previous cases tried in Missouri’s courts awarded the plaintiffs in those cases a combined total of more than $200 million.
“Plaintiffs in these cases claim that talcum powder products manufactured and marketed by Johnson & Johnson have contributed to the development of cancer,” says the representative for talcumpowder.org. “They allege that the pharmaceutical company knew for decades that a strong link existed between the use of talc and the development of cancer, yet the company continued to produce and market those products.”
More than 2,000 lawsuits in total have been filed against Johnson & Johnson with regards to the link to ovarian cancer and the use of talc for feminine hygiene. Plaintiffs and their attorneys claim that the company willingly and knowingly allowed women to continue to use these talc based products after studies have shown that they should be regarded as unsafe. The latest trial ended in a victory for the pharmaceutical company, although experts claim that it just goes to show which cases should be filed and which should not. The representative for talcumpowder.org states that women who feel they have a claim should speak with a qualified attorney to determine if their case has merit.
