Key West Prepares For Record Breaking Summer Wedding Season

Combining the continued growth of the economy with a greater desire to travel and the popularity of destination weddings, travel experts agree that Key West, Florida will have its busiest summer on record.

Destination weddings continue to be on the rise, and the number one choice for island weddings – Key West Florida – is preparing to break last year’s records. Industry experts are releasing preliminary reports that show more people are expected to travel this summer in general, and that several economic factors are making the southernmost city more popular than ever.

“Tying the knot in the Sunshine State is easy and affordable,” points out Holly V. Kapherr of Destination Wedding Magazine. “You can arrive within three days of your ceremony, save money on the license – which any county can issue with no waiting period and no blood test – by taking the four-hour Florida premarital course online, and have up to 60 days to get married.”

The cost and simplicity is not just something that the bride, groom and wedding party have to worry about. These days, destination weddings are much bigger than just a handful of people. Trying to find the right location to encourage the most people to attend is critical. Allowing guests to combine the wedding with a family vacation is a great way to make that happen.

“Key West and the Florida Keys are the perfect spot for families to enjoy a tropical island family vacation – without leaving the United States,” said Nancy Shretter, editor of the Family Travel Network. “There’s so much to see and do here, with activities to please every member of the family. This way, once the festivities are over, families can take part in much of what the island has to offer them as well.”

Of course, there are certainly plenty of reasons for the adults to make the trip as well. Kapherr’s co-worker at Destination Weddings points out, “Guests love the Keys lifestyle because it prizes all things casual, be it via expanded happy hours – hey it’s 5 o’clock somewhere – or the dress code: “wedding chic,” means shorts or khakis for men and breezy sundresses and open-toed sandals for women.”

Most importantly, as host of some 10,000 wedding related events a year, Key West, Florida offers plenty of options for all aspects of the ceremony and the reception, from romantic settings and stunning Key West restaurants to florists, caterers, entertainment and beauty salons.

“We’ve been involved with over five hundred weddings a year for the last few years,” says Wednesday Vogel, owner of the iconic Roof Top Café with her husband Norman. “It has definitely been a fast growing aspect of our business. Some of the most popular weekends this summer have already been sold out.”

Finally, with two new hotels having opened within the last year and four others having undergone extensive remodeling, there are more rooms than ever. Travel experts in Key West, on the web and around the country all agree that there should be no problem filling those rooms. “I think,” Vogel added, “we are finally seeing the end of a ‘seasonal resort town’ and watching Key West become a year-round destination.”
