Killarney Springs Plumbing and Heating Introduces New Blog

October 08, 2019 – – Killarney Springs Plumbing and Heating of North Dade, FL has announced a new blog where their customers and the general public can get more information about the heating and pluming systems they rely on every day. On this blog, they post plumbing and home care tips as well as tips on when to call a professional. It can be found at https://killarneysprings.blogspot.com.

One recent blog post, categorized as plumbing tips, offers tips on how to unclog a drain. Clogged drains are a common problem for almost everyone, because most people deal with drains in their sinks, bathtubs, showers and toilets. Clogged drains are an especially frustrating problem to deal with, because any sink or basin becomes effectively unusable when the drain is clogged, and, if someone should try to use a drain that has been clogged, they risk causing a flood, which could cause water damage to everything surrounding the sink and beyond, and water damage is some of the most difficult damage to recover from.

Thankfully, there are lots of ways to clear clogged drains, and Killarney Springs Plumbing and Heating has included them all in their recent blog post. The first suggestion they give is to pour boiling water in the drain. Drains are sometimes clogged by grease or other things that can be dissolved by hot water, which means pouring hot water in the drain can clear the blockage. The blog post cautions that some pipes are made with PVC, which can also be dissolved, or at least damaged, by sufficiently hot water, so people who don’t know what kind of pipes they have or know they have PVC pipes should never pour water over 175 degrees down their drains. If the pipes are metal, boiling water is fine.

Another tip for unclogging drains is to use baking soda and vinegar. Baking soda and vinegar create a “volcano” effect with a chemical reaction, examples of which can be found on YouTube. Because baking soda is basic and vinegar is acidic, mixing them causes a chemical reaction as the pH of the solution tries to reach equilibrium, which makes the solution fizz and bubble, which can dislodge detritus causing clogged drains. To use the baking soda and vinegar method to unclog a clogged drain, first pour baking soda down the drain, then dump vinegar on top of the baking soda. There is some risk of the drain overflowing while the chemical reaction happens, so it is best to use caution with this method of unclogging drains, to avoid anything spilling outside of the basin and causing water damage. Baking soda and vinegar can be used for clogged toilets, as long as the toilet is flushed immediately after pouring the baking soda and vinegar to get it into the pipes. Alka-seltzer can also be used for this method of unclogging drains, since it is also an alkaline reaction when it interacts with water, but it is not as effective and removing clogs from drains.

If baking soda and vinegar don’t do the trick, this blog post suggests, the next line of defense is a plunger. Plungers push water into a drain with a lot of force in order to force a blockage to leave a drain and allow water through, and are especially effective for clogged toilets. Toilets are best plunged with a flange plunger or a toilet plunger, while sinks and bathtubs are cleared best with a cup plunger. In both cases, it is important to verify that the the edges of the plunger are properly sealed around the drain so the water being plunged actually goes into the drain. For sinks and bathtubs, the overflow drain should also be sealed prior to plunging.

If plunging doesn’t work for clearing a clogged drain, the blog post recommends trying to snake the drain, either with a straightened wire coat hanger for minor clogs or a snake or handheld drain auger for more intense clogs. After snaking, chemical drain cleaners can be tried, though the post warns that they are potentially quite harmful to the environment and not especially effective on many clogs. If none of these do-it-yourself options work for clearing a clogged drain, the Killarney Springs Heating and Plumbing recommends calling a professional plumber.
