Las Vegas, United States – August 14, 2015 /PressCable/ —
Recent pool drownings in the Las Vegas area have brought attention to help prevent future drownings. Some states, such as California, already have established laws concerning pool fences. Las Vegas does have a law that requires homeowners to have a pool fence, however, it only pertains to the perimiter fence and gates that lead to the yard.
The climate during the summer months in the desert can get quite hot. Many families take to public or backyard swimming pools to get some relief, while having a bit of fun, and maybe some relaxation. However, Las Vegas has seen an increase in swimming pool drownings this summer. In most cases, these drownings are of young children who had inadequate or no adult supervision. Some of these drownings were at family gatherings around the backyard pool, where the parent or supervising adult was not paying attention. In other cases, the child wandered into the pool, unknowingly. Perhaps more lives could be saved with the installation of a pool safety fence.
Although a pool fence is not a “cure-all” to accidental drownings, it can certainly be a preventative tool for keeping unsupervised children from entering the pool and possibly drowning. Of course, the best forms of drowning prevention are adult supervision and common sense. Children, especially infants and toddlers, are curious and need to be taught to stay away from the pool unless closely supervised by an adult. A pool fence should be considered as a safety precaution rather than an inconvenience.
There are several types of pool fence options but wrought iron fences and gates are the most popular, being ideal for community pools, but can be used to protect residential pools as well. All gates need to be self closing so that they automatically close when entering or leaving the pool area. The picket length should be 60″ high and the total fence should be 66 ” high. There should never be any type of scrolls or decorative items in the fence that could encourage climbing. Items should never be stored against or around the fence that could entice children to climb the fence to get access. All work should be done by a licensed contractor so it is within code.
