Lawsuit Claims That Invokana Side Effects Including Kidney Damage & Stroke

April 29, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports Invokana plaintiff allegations which claim that the drug can cause kidney damage in those taking it. According to reports from the FDA, the agency received over 50 reports of adverse events stating that they suffered renal impairment and kidney failure after taking the SGLT2 class inhibitor, Invokana.

Invokana, a type II diabetes drug created to reduce the dependence that a patient has on insulin is part of a new class of drugs known as SGLT2 inhibitors. Where the kidneys will generally absorb excess glucose, with these types of drugs the kidneys are instead forced to expel that excess glucose through urination. This can create excess stress on the kidneys which could potentially cause damage that cannot be reversed. As a result, many patients who suffer kidney damage may suffer kidney failure and require a transplant and dialysis.

The FDA released a warning to the public in December of 2015, stating that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the drug manufacturer, would be required to change the warning labels already on their drug to better reflect the possibility of developing ketoacidosis or even urinary tract infections.

According to FDA reports, 19 reports have been filed which state that other life-threatening problems have begun in the body as a urinary tract infections, later becoming a blood or kidney infections. All of these individuals later required dialysis, having suffered kidney failure as a result. Unfortunately damage sustained to the kidneys is not reversible, so any individual that suffers from such severe damage will likely require dialysis while awaiting a complete transplant.

“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
