Lawsuit: Plaintiffs Allege That Invokana Side Effects May Include Damage to the Kidneys

May 01, 2016 – – TheProductLaywers.com comments on allegations made about potential side effects for type-2 diabetes patients who use the drug Invokana. Plaintiffs in several lawsuits filed against the manufacturer of Invokana, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, allege that Invokana can cause damage to the kidneys. The FDA has not yet established a definitive link, but within just the first year since the release of this drug, between 2013 and 2014, there were 50 adverse event reports made to the FDA citing renal impairment and kidney failure in those using it.

Invokana is a SGLT2 inhibitor which works by helping the body dispose of excess glucose. For type II diabetics, the patients for whom this drug has been approved, eliminating excess glucose means a lower level of dependence on insulin. The way that this can be done is by using the kidneys to keep the excess glucose from being reabsorbed and eliminating it from the body. This method of disposing of additional glucose can sometimes result in strain and damage to the kidneys. Unfortunately kidney damage cannot be reversed, so if the damage is severe enough dialysis and a transplant may be necessary.

Renal failure also has been reported, leading to extreme problems for the patients themselves which continue long after they stop taking the drug. The FDA continues to look into the potential for a link between use and kidney damage. The agency has warned all patients who are taking Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors to be on the lookout for side effects which may indicate a kidney problem.

“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
