When asked for a comment, she said, “People are often surprised to learn about how widespread tax scams and accounting fraud are, something that the IRS issues warning about every year. Even if you’re not caught up in a scam, your accountant might not be doing what you hired them to do. Here’s what to be on the lookout for.”
A major cause for concern is if an account fails to meet deadlines.
“Simply put, your accountant should be able to deliver all your assignments – no matter whether it’s a tax return or a financial statement – on time. Missing due dates for taxes can cause you problems down the line with the IRS, so it’s important that you have a trusted professional on top of things,” she said.
Ho further mentioned that responsiveness is also important. According to her, competent accountants should quickly return emails or phone calls or even be able to set up a meeting to answer any questions.
Not explaining financial statements is another warning sign that an accountant is not doing their job.
“Let’s say that your accountant provides financial statements for your business on a monthly basis, however you have no idea how to read the statement. It’s your accountant’s job to sit down with you and breakdown financial statements so that you’re able to easily understand what they have delivered to you,” she added.
One thing to keep an eye on is whether or not an accountant is efficient.
“This is particularly true if you’re paying someone by the hour. Some people might still be using older techniques, which are now seen as inefficient. For instance, make sure that your accountant uses highly-rated tax preparation software and that their methods of preparing your taxes are not outdated,” she explained.
Another red flag is if an accountant is unable to clearly state their qualifications when asked.
When asked to elaborate, Ho said, “You should feel safe sharing your financial information when hiring an accountant, so it’s better to be thorough in questioning someone about their qualifications. If you hired a CPA to prepare your taxes, you could double-check that they are in fact a CPA on the IRS website through their directory.”
She was quick to add that it’s also a good idea to read online reviews or ask for references before hiring an accountant.
