When asked for a comment, Paulding said that she works diligently to establish rapport and “developing a trust relationship” with a client, particularly at the start of the case.
“It’s important to develop trust by being upfront and honest with your client about what to expect in the case, because in most cases I find they’ll be as honest with you.”
She continued, “The last thing that a defense attorney wants, is to be surprised and find out that there was some really crucial information that the client didn’t share which can really hurt the outcome.”
Paulding – who has tried hundreds of criminal cases as a prosecutor – has detailed knowledge of the inner workings of the courtroom, particularly in Virginia Beach.
When asked how she helps her clients in the courtroom, Paulding said, “Even though I fight hard for my clients and don’t let witnesses off lightly I always want to show complete respect to the court. Whenever I’m cross-examining the witness, I’m doing it in a kind and respectful manner. Juries and judges tend not to like it if it looks like you’re beating a witness up. Being liked by the jury goes a long way.”
“I’ve found that the jury appreciates this type of approach, and they don’t look at your client like they’re a bad person. They look at your client as someone who has hired a lawyer who is doing their very best to diligently represent them,” she added.
However, striking a balance is key. According to Paulding, it’s important to be firm and “attack the inconsistencies” from witnesses.
A major problem that Paulding comes across with her clients is that many are unaware of what’s going to happen during a trial or what the consequences might be if they plead guilty in court.
When asked what advice she would provide to anyone charged with a crime, she commented, “Whenever you are charged with a crime – whether it’s something very minor or something much more serious – you need to make sure to understand every part of the process.”
“You’re paying and hiring your lawyer to answer those questions for you, so take the time to ask them and make sure you understand everything before you step in that courtroom,” she said.
