Coral Gables, Florida, United States – May 30, 2023 —
The rise of ‘green burials’ among Floridian citizens has prompted leading Estate Planning Attorney Ana M. Veliz to offer a new branch to her services when people discuss their alternative preferences to cremation.

Veliz said traditional estate planning, such as formalizing plans for people’s assets when they die, is now having to shift to accommodate an increase in demand from people asking to write into their wills how they want ‘to go out green’.
She said that such requests are increasingly becoming part of her mainstream services and that her law office has sought to assure people that their plans to be buried in as environmentally-friendly a way as possible are not that uncommon.
“We would advise anyone concerned about their carbon footprint or the impact on the environment when it comes to cremations and burials to discuss all the options with their families and estate planning attorneys,” said the Founder of the Law Offices of Ana M. Veliz, P.A. in Coral Gables.
She said clients asking for ‘green burials’ should thoroughly research the options and identify where they want to be placed.
Fortunately, Florida is one of the most progressive U.S. states for accommodating green or alternative burials. It has seven green burial sites, one of the highest numbers, while the Glendale Memorial Nature Preserve, which opened more than 20 years ago, was among the first to be established.
Florida is also home to the first company to offer to turn loved ones’ cremations into artificial coral reefs. The state also offers its citizens a range of options for body disposal. It was one of the earliest adopters of ‘water cremations’ – or alkaline hydrolysis, a process in which a body is dissolved in a chemical solution.
Estimates from the Green Burial Council suggest that a traditional burial produces 250 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to a 300-mile trip in a typical car.
A typical cremation burns natural gas to heat a body to about 2,000 degrees for around two hours, generating about 460 pounds of carbon emissions, according to a 2016 analysis from a Dutch sustainability researcher. A green burial can produce close to zero emissions.
Veliz concluded: “Once a person is settled on their options, they can clarify matters as part of their discussions with their families and estate planning attorney. It will offer them peace of mind that their burial option is clearly written and understood.”
“But most importantly, they need to tell someone what they want done with their body when they die, particularly if they want a ‘green goodbye’.”
