Levaquin Attorneys Say Pharmaceutical Company Could Be Out Many Millions In Settlements
April 10, 2017 – – Levaquin attorneys recently stated that the settlements involving the antibiotic Levaquin could easily reach into the billions as more and more cases continue to be filed. Settlements have already been reached in several cases with others ending in monetary settlements to plaintiffs after jury trials.
The lawsuits have been filed against Janssen Pharmaceutical and its parent company Johnson & Johnson, claiming that the companies both knew about the risks associated with taking the medication, yet continued to push those medications to doctors to prescribe to their patients. Lawsuits allege that the medication was mislabeled and misbranded and claim that it can cause significant harm and death to those who use it.
A spokesperson for a Levaquin lawsuits site says, “The pharmaceutical companies are not the only ones under fire here. There have been other defendants named in these proceedings, although the companies that manufactured and marketed the drugs are looking to bear the brunt of the monetary costs related to the lawsuits.”
In November 2015, the Antimicrobial Drugs Advisory Committee, part of the FDA, and the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committed ordered that Levaquin be placed in the black box warning category, which is the strongest warning for all medications in the fluoroquinolone class. Since the first lawsuit was filed some time ago, many claimants have come forward alleging that the medication has caused a number of serious side effects including peripheral neuropathy, tendon damage, skin conditions and even heart damage.
“The pharmaceutical companies maintain that their actions were appropriate and that they acted responsibly,” says the Levaquin information site representative. “However, they failed consumers in continuing to market and distribute these products without properly warning of the serious, often fatal, permanent side effects of the drugs.”
The two companies face thousands of lawsuits because of the drug and lost more than $1.8 million to the plaintiff in the first case alone. The Levaquin site representative says that if this case sets any sort of precedent, Johnson & Johnson could be looking at many millions in payouts when all of their cases go to trial or are settled out of court.
