Limitless Technology: “Gift-giving in Singapore is now more intentional.”

The e-commerce group identified new customer behaviour patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to the pandemic, Singaporeans are home-bound now more than ever, leading to a clear pivot to online shopping within their walls. On top of necessities such as groceries, shopping for gifts online is a trend that will continue to rise, especially in times when customers are unable to physically meet. A 2021 Visa study showed that 74% of consumers in Singapore are shopping online more frequently due to the country’s lockdowns, with one-third of the population being first-timers in online shopping.

With over 340,700 people spread globally, the Singaporean diaspora has increased their spending in remote gift-giving as international orders increased by 12% in 2021 compared to the previous year. For many Singaporeans, especially those living abroad, gifting in 2021 has expanded from an act of love on special occasions to a deeper message of empathy and a way to bridge the physical distance caused by travel restrictions. Moreover, 1.3 million out of a population of 5.6 million people in Singapore are expatriates, suggesting that family and friends separated by the pandemic could have added to the overseas orders.

This is especially evident during global celebrations. On Valentine’s Day 2021, domestic orders increased by 19% while international orders increased by 72%, further signalling that Singaporeans both local and overseas, have been trying to connect with their loved ones by gifting presents from afar. Flower Chimp also observed a similar trend on Mother’s Day, when the domestic orders increased by just 5%, while the international orders peaked to 118%.

With travelling off the table, gift-giving has become a lot more intentional, with consumers searching for items that bring comfort, ensure well-being and help create a positive space at home. “COVID-19 was a pivotal moment as we saw online sales of birthday presents and gifts skyrocketing, mostly sent because of cancelled physical celebrations. With the border restrictions, we see many customers trying to compensate for that lost time and experiences,” explained Niklas Frassa, COO of Limitless Technology.

After multiple cancellations of lifetime milestones such as graduations, weddings and birthdays, many tried to recreate celebratory experiences at home by sending gifts from overseas, skyping with loved ones, and recording unwrapping videos. “As such, we’ll strive to amp up our strategy of offering great gifting options to our website, including unique bundles to enable customers find the right gifts for their specific occasion,” comments Frassa of the shift.

Singapore has proudly managed to ‘flatten the curve’ with its strict COVID-19 measures at the beginning of 2021. However, it is currently experiencing another spike in locally-transmitted cases as daily cases reached the 100th mark as of 4th August. Taking this into account, Flower Chimp is bracing itself for the rest of 2021, while also preparing for a more positive outlook in 2022.

Besides flower bouquets, Flower Chimp also offers gifts such as chocolate bouquets, cake and flower combos, as well as fruit baskets for the health-conscious. On top of free delivery, the company also offers same-day shipping nationwide for all its orders and is currently looking at expanding its product catalogue in the coming months.
