Local Business Leader Aids in Camelback Mountain Rescue

November 24, 2015 – – Phoenix, AZ- A hiker who fell from Camelback Mountain last Friday survived, thanks in large part to the dedicated rescue workers who came to his aid. He was also helped, it turns out, by where he happened to land.

Nicolas Porter, whose backyard rests against a large portion of Camelback Mountain, heard screams for help on November 20th and rushed to his back patio to see where the screams were coming from. Porter looked up at the mountain that is in his backyard and saw a man with his face completely covered in blood. A hiker had fallen down the mountain.

Porter started to hike up the mountain to get closer to the man and make sure he was okay. It soon became clear he was not. Battered and bruised the bottom of the mountain, the hiker was distressed and disoriented. Porter called out with questions as he approached, and the hiker admitted to struggling to keep the will to survive.

Porter was able to get the man talking and keep him alert and relaxed while waiting for help to arrive. More importantly, he provided the encouragement the man needed to keep fighting.

“He just needed someone to be there for him in that moment,” Porter said, “and I was blessed to be able to help.”

Minutes later, several fire trucks, police cars and helicopters arrived and the man was soon rescued.

As it turns out, the hiker couldn’t have picked a better backyard for his horrible fall. Porter is generally known as Dr. Nicolas, and was recently named as one of Phoenix Business Journal’s 25 Most Admired Leaders.
