Long Term effects of Covid-19 and Mental Health

Resurgence Behavioral Health examines the Long Term effects of Covid-19 and Mental Health. Programs that offer treatment for mental health

As the United States struggles once again to contain COVID-19, concerns are growing about the long-term impact on mental health in the U.S. As local reports show, this concern only grows as the number of people with mental illness increases.

Programs for mental health at Resurgence Behavioral Health have been seeing clients since the beginning of the lockdown and will continue to offer aid to those in need.

Model calculations show that the pandemic will increase the number of deaths from mental illness and suicide and an increase in suicide rates and suicidal thoughts. In contrast, the total number of COVID-19 – related deaths – will increase. Although national data is sparse, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) suggest that the burden that women and people of color disproportionately bear will quadruple by the end of the year, according to a recent study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego. The use of crisis hotlines is also on the rise, and there are reports of shocking proportions: for example, calls to The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) hotline has increased 8,000 percent, and mental health calls in New York City have increased more than 1,500 percent.

Basic survival is under threat, and many people live in constant fear, with consequences ranging from negative mental well-being to high blood pressure. Living in uncertainty also increases the psychological impact of other stressors.

Children are also exposed to the stress their parents are under and are more likely to be affected by school closures and discontinuing social activities. School closures affect access to mental health services for children in particular. More than half of children who use mental health services receive at least some school settings services. The lack of a single national strategy to address the mental and health crisis makes it difficult to implement the national strategy on mental health and mental and physical health care management.

For example, the state is responsible for providing mental health services to children and adolescents. Alternatively, there is a lack of coordination between mental and physical health providers and the public sector.
Of the 15 states that have not yet expanded Medicaid, four are in states with high rates of mental illness and substance use disorders. To respond to this crisis, states should consider the need for additional funding to meet expected rising demand and access to mental health services, even when available, the report said.

It is likely that this pandemic’s psychological consequences will continue to increase and that the tightening of social determinants of health will take years, probably decades.

Some states have already taken measures that could help mitigate the impact on residents “mental health, but states need to be more proactive in planning the long-term impact of COVID-19 and the growing need for mental health services. When choosing an approach to implementation, it is essential to consider the factors that prevail in each state. The 1918 flu pandemic led to a significant increase in the number of children and adolescents born from the womb during the epidemic, suggesting that there may be a generational effect.

States must introduce strict monitoring of mental health outcomes to enable a rapid response to emerging needs. For example, increasing the number of sites and bottlenecks for providers who mental health providers are not screening at the same time could ultimately lead to a misallocation of resources. To plan effectively and respond strategically, states must plan for the long-term effects of COVID-19.
