Los Angeles Man Files E-Cig Lawsuit Against Seller, Maker Of E-Cigarette After Explosion Injures Him
May 31, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on a Los Angeles man who is suing the manufacturer and seller of his e-cigarette after it exploded in his pocket, causing serious injuries. CBS Los Angeles said the man had been in a friend’s hotel room when he felt a burning sensation on his leg. He was able to push the burning device down through his pant leg and onto the floor after he realized he had been burned and that the battery in the device had caught fire. Once the cigarette was on the floor, it began to spark, leaving a burn mark on the hotel carpet, the report said. The man claimed he suffered second and third-degree burns on his thumbs and left leg.
This is not the first incident involving exploding e-cigarettes to take place in California. In February, NBC reported that a 26-year-old Orange County man suffered second and third-degree burns when his device went up in flames in his pocket. He spent 11 days in the hospital and doctors told him his leg would take two years to heal, according to the report.
In cases where lithium ion batteries explode, the devices typically spew hot liquid and can sometimes shoot pieces of shrapnel at high speeds as a result of the building heat from the battery. In those cases, the liquid can cause serious burns to users or others and in some cases start fires that spread. The shrapnel that has sometimes been ejected from the device can also cause serious injury.
In addition to these cases, other incidents have also been reported in the U.K. and in states including Utah, Florida, New York, Colorado, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Texas, Oregon and Louisiana. As cases continue to accumulate, Lipsig, Shapey, Manus & Moverman are looking to assist those who have been affected by explosive e-cigarettes.
