Louisiana Xarelto Lawsuit Plaintiff Alleges Blood-Thinning Drug Caused Fatal Bleed Of Grandmother
April 22, 2016 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on another lawsuit which has been filed against Xarelto manufacturers Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of corporate giant Johnson & Johnson). The lawsuit was filed in reference to new-generation anticoagulant drug Xarelto and was filed by a granddaughter on behalf of her deceased grandmother.
The granddaughter alleges that her grandmother passed away after experiencing a sudden and severe bleeding episode while using Xarelto. Further lawsuit details note that in September of 2014, the grandmother obtained a prescription for the blood thinner from her doctor. It was given in order to treat her deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and prevent blood clot complications. Just two months later, in November of 2014, the grandmother developed an intracranial bleed (brain bleed) while Xarelto was actively in her system. Physicians reportedly indicated that the bleed was “irreversible and fatal,” and it caused the woman to die.
The granddaughter now alleges that Xarelto was the cause of her grandmother’s bleed, and therefore her death as well. She notes that doctors could not clot the woman’s blood and stop the bleed, because they were unable to counter the drug’s effects. The plaintiff additionally indicates that when determining which blood thinner her grandmother should take, they had made note of several Xarelto advertisements which promoted the positive aspects of the drug without adequately warning of the dangerous potential side effects. She stated that the marketing tactics of the defendants, “overstated the efficacy of Xarelto with respect to preventing stroke and systemic embolism.”
The lawsuit was filed in Eastern Louisiana under case number 2:15-cv-05874, and has since been consolidated to form multidistrict litigation number 2592 by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. This MDL includes more than 2,800 other similar Xarelto lawsuits. The plaintiffs involved are anxiously awaiting early 2017 bellwether trials as ordered by overseeing Judge Eldon Fallon. As time moves on, Xarelto lawsuits continue to grow in number.
