Major Regeneration of London’s Oldest Buildings Transforms City & Drives Economic Growth
Major regeneration projects involving some of London’s oldest and most historic buildings are transforming the city and driving economic growth.
United Kingdom – April 30, 2019 / / —
London is a city famed for its architecture and aesthetic appeal. Bursting at the seams with buildings that date back centuries, regeneration and renovation projects within the urban area are serving not only to enhance the visual appeal of the city, but also to strengthen the economy and tighten community ties.
A report compiled by English Heritage suggested that “there is a strong economic case for regenerating historic buildings. The benefits relate not only to the individual building, but also to the wider area and community.” Restoring historic sites to their former glory preserves London’s unique identity and character, brings communities together and creates focal points, which draw crowds from all over the world.
A glimpse into London’s architectural history and its most famous buildings
The city of London is synonymous with magnificent buildings, and the dramatic cityscapes demonstrate the diversity of influences. From Baroque, Georgian and Regency styles to Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco and futuristic, modern architecture, there’s an array of eye-catching buildings on display. A former monastery turned Gothic church in 1245, Westminster Abbey is one of London’s most iconic landmarks. The venue of many a royal occasion, the church attracts more than 1.5 million visitors per year. Another highlight for visitors is the Natural History Museum, one of the city’s most popular attractions. Housed in a Romanesque building dating back to 1753, the museum opened in 1881. Today, more than 5 million people visit every year. The BBC’s Broadcasting House is another feat of engineering admired by many. Built in 1932 as the corporation’s first dedicated radio broadcasting building, it has recently been renovated extensively to create a new facility, which houses no less than 36 radio studios.
See Brilliance and the regeneration of The Plaza, Oxford Street
One of London’s most high-profile streets has recently been transformed thanks to the regeneration of The Plaza. See Brilliance, a company that specialises in the restoration of buildings, played an instrumental role in breathing new life into the building’s distinctive facades. As technical director, Nigel Bennett, explains, “Situated in London’s famous Oxford Street, The Plaza is another example of the typically stunning historic architecture seen around the city. This particular building was first opened as a department store in 1894. One hundred and twenty-five years on and the building remains a centrepiece of Oxford Street, but decades of weathering and pollution had caused the building to look tired.”
“As part of a major regeneration project completed in 2018, See Brilliance undertook external restoration works on The Plaza using specialist products and techniques to fully restore the brass trim surrounding the building. Our operatives also prepared and decorated approximately 160 flowers seen high up on the outside of the building.”
Restoring historic buildings like The Plaza is a means of facilitating economic growth, bringing people together over a shared appreciation for architectural gems and encouraging more people to visit London.
