Man Placed Into Coma After E-Cigarette Explosion Files Lawsuit Discussing Significant Burns

May 15, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on the details of a January 2016 Miami Herald news release. The story discussed a Naples man who was pursuing an e-cigarette related lawsuit after allegedly suffering painful burns to his face, throat, and lungs after the device exploded within his mouth. The young man, Evan Spahlinger, indicated that he was using the device because he felt it was a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes.

The man’s lawsuit states that the e-cigarette he was using exploded “…into flames in his face, causing him to inhale flames, smoke, and scorching hot air,” and indicates that he suffered from severe injuries which caused his esophagus and lungs to swell due to the internal burns. To treat this, the Kendall Regional Medical Center’s burn unit placed him into a medically-induced coma.

The Miami Herald noted, “With millions of users across the country, e-cigarettes deliver vaporized nicotine through a heated liquid solution. But questions about the health and fire risks of the products have mounted, with the U.S. Department of Transportation recently banning e-cigarettes from checked bags on airplanes.”

As the use of these products continues to increase, stories such as this one continue to emerge as well. A young man from California also filed an e-cigarette related lawsuit after his device reportedly exploded in his pocket, causing him to suffer from 2nd and 3rd-degree burns and requiring that he undergo multiple surgeries and skin grafts while healing.
