Media PA Criminal Defense Lawyer Explains Why Getting Advice Early is Crucial

Getting expert advice is highly recommended if you are accused of a serious crime from an expert criminal defense attorney.

Accusations of serious crimes can send shock waves through families and communities. Whether proven true or later overturned, charges such as these can be devastating to the lives of those involved, says Marybeth Welch, Esquire.

Ms. Welch is a seasoned criminal defense lawyer who has spent more than 25 years defending men and women accused of serious crimes in the Media, Pennsylvania area.

In most situations, she says, the most crucial thing isn’t the person’s guilt or innocence – or even the evidence in the case.

“What really matters is that the accused individual has an experienced advocate from the very beginning – if possible, well charges are even filed,” Ms. Welch states.

“People accused of these crimes are often so intent on proving that they’re innocent that they muddy the waters,” she says. “What many people do not realize is that investigators are free to shade the truth in questioning suspects. They may claim to have ‘proof positive’ that the person is guilty, when in fact this isn’t the case. This can lead worried defendants to agree with statements that aren’t fair or accurate.”

It’s crucial for all the facts to be thoroughly researched and for the full context of the situation to be understood, Ms. Welch adds. “Accusations of this kind can be made in cases where adults are fighting over custody of children,” she says. “A father or mother may be accused of touching a child in an inappropriate way, for example, by the other parent.

“I have also seen cases in which children or youths are seeking revenge against an adult, and therefore made accusations that later proved untrue,” she says.

Ms. Welch adds that in most cases, the overwhelming public interest in cases involving sexual offenses is simply a reflection of concern for the victims, especially when children are involved.

“As serious as these crimes are, and as heated as the atmosphere around the charges may become, there is no reason that every individual involved cannot be treated with respect, especially minors who may be called to testify,” she says. “The situation is a sensitive one, and the conduct of the attorneys and other authorities should be equally sensitive.”

Because the consequences of a criminal conviction can be severe, Ms. Welch notes, defendants need to take immediate action to protect their rights.

“I have seen parents barred from visiting their young children, adults who’ve ended up on sex offender registries and therefore limited in terms of where they can live and who they can associate with,” she says. “These situations can mean years of anguish for those accused, even if the charges are later disproven.”

Ms. Welch encourages those accused of any felony, but especially a sex offense, to seek experienced counsel from the earliest point in the case. Her office at 17 Veterans Square, Media, Pennsylvania, is convenient for those who would like to come in for a free consultation.
