Memphis Man Considers Lawsuit After Exploding E-Cigarette Breaks His Neck
May 23, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on an incident in which a Memphis man suffered a broken neck after his e-cigarette exploded. According to the New York Daily News, the man had been smoking the e-cigarette during his break at work when it exploded, knocking out his teeth, breaking his neck and burning his mouth. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and underwent successful spinal surgery in November, the article states. The family has spoken with lawyers to determine whether to file a lawsuit.
His is not a unique case according to some other e-cigarette users. While FEMA states that 80 percent of reported e-cigarette explosions occur while the devices are being charged, there are a few cases in which they have combusted while in use. Another incident involving an explosion during use was reported in North Carolina when a man went to take a puff of an e-cigarette and the device exploded in his face. He had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital where he was treated for second and third-degree burns on his chest and had to receive over 30 stitches on his nose. In addition, he lost his left eye in the explosion, according to reports.
As cases continue to accumulate, Lipsig, Shapey, Manus & Moverman are looking to assist those who have been affected by explosive e-cigarettes. According to FEMA, there have been 25 e-cigarette explosion incidents reported in the U.S. between 2009 and 2014 but the numbers are expected to be higher based on the amount of incidents that go unreported. Attorneys such as Marc Freund are working to ensure that those individuals who have been injured by the devices are able to explore their legal rights fully.
