Mesh Erosion: A Look At One Of The Alleged Side Effects Mentioned In A Number Of Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits

The device was approved by the FDA in both 1996 and 2002 for different purposes. In 1996, mesh was approved for use in procedures for stress urinary incontinence and then in 2002 as a treatment for pelvic organ prolapse.

Since its approval by the FDA and its use by thousands of women, several thousand plaintiffs have come forward to allege that the devices, manufactured by C.R. Bard, Johnson & Johnson, Boston Scientific, Coloplast Corp and Cook Medical, cause serious negative side effects that are not thoroughly detailed by the companies. Those side effects have included bleeding, infection, organ perforation, vaginal or pelvic pain, inability to engage in sexual intercourse, vaginal shrinkage, vaginal scarring, recurrent incontinence, mesh contraction and neuro-muscular problems.

One of the most commonly reported side effects of the device is mesh erosion through the vagina. When this happens, the mesh can break apart and can cut or perforate organs including the bladder, vagina and bowels, according to Transvaginal Mesh Center.

Several thousand cases concerning mesh have already been brought to court and more are expected to accumulate.
