South Florida investors take over popular sushi restaurant in Miami Springs and with the help of local residents turn it into the perfect environment to enjoy a meal.

Statistics show that 83% of people would rather eat locally, preferably in a family-owned restaurant. Unfortunately, with the rise of super malls and corporate chains, we have a lot of restaurants that are lacking in the close-knit community feeling and to quote a cliché “a place where everybody knows your name”.

In America’s history, we always had the neighborhood diner and the coffee shop to get a meal and meet with friends, sometimes even catch up on the news. But in 2015 that atmosphere is much different. It’s been over 50 years since sushi has been introduced in the Little Tokyo neighborhood of Los Angeles, what was exotic then is quite common today.

Mike Gonzales and Carlos Fox are business partners with an eagle’s eye for opportunity. Taking advantage of the growing sushi demand and the pristine location of Thai Rama Sushi in Miami Springs, they quickly jumped at the opportunity to purchase the property in early 2015. After remodeling the restaurant from floor-up literally, from bathrooms to website, from new service systems to better training for the staff, they took what was a quaint restaurant and turned it into the place to be any day of the week.

“When this property became available for sale,” said Mike Gonzales, co-owner “the opportunity presented itself not just to be restaurant owners but to be part of a community. That’s why the focus was lasered first on the remodeling and reconstruction so we could re-position ourselves not just as a Miami Springs sushi restaurant, but as a much-needed community staple.”

Thai Rama Sushi has added extended service hours and even a Thursday Karaoke Night that has become the buzz of their location. With a new menu that brings items that are not found in any other restaurant, they are quickly becoming the choice for fresh sushi and a fun atmosphere.

“When Mike came to me with the idea to be restaurant owners I looked into it.” said Carlos Fox, co-owner “Ironically, sushi was created in 1799 as an early form of fast-food, a far cry from what we call fast-food in today’s world. So, I jumped at the chance to not only be a restaurant owner but to provide fresh, high-quality food in an age when the focus is not on people, but on profits. It may not be much, but clearly an impact is being made.”
