Midtown Fire At Construction Site, Prompts Comments From Construction Accident Lawyer

June 20, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com’s Thomas Moverman commented on a recent development in New York City, where a fire broke out at a Midtown construction site. Moverman urges federal regulators to consider revising current safety procedures for construction workers. Attorney Moverman also applauded the local fire department for responding to the emergency so quickly, which deterred the potential for further damage from the fire.

According to a local report from DNAInfo.com, 4 construction workers were injured in a Midtown construction site fire on the morning of June 7th. The fire occurred at 390 Madison Avenue and East 47th Street, due to a basement transformer catching fire. The four construction workers were sent to local hospitals for treatment, and the report indicates that the victims luckily only sustained minor injuries. The workers on the construction site were working on a project to rebuild an office tower, and are employees of Tishman Construction.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) claimed that in 2014 there were nearly 3,000,000 non-fatal injuries and illnesses sustained by workers. ⅓ of victims missed 1 day of work, however, the average time absent from work following a non-fatal injury or illness was 9 days. Often times victims aren’t as fortunate, and sustain injuries that leave them hospitalized or even fatally injured.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), which is a federally mandated agency that has the responsibility of looking after the safety and well-being of over 130 million American workers. The organization is extensively understaffed, and underfunded, while still being held responsible for nearly 8 million worksites across the United States, while employing only an estimated 2,200 inspectors. With such a tremendous responsibility, OSHA is in need of more employees, so that each inspector is not tasked with watching over 59,000-plus workers each.
