Military and Teen Suicide Prevention Expert Will Be at Tucson (Arizona) Festival of Books March 11-12
March 09, 2017 – – Arizona author Sande Roberts will be among hundreds of authors mingling with an expected crowd of 100,000 people over the two-day Tucson Festival of Books March 11-12, 2017. Roberts’ expertise is in the critical topic of crisis intervention and suicide prevention.
After 25 years in the crisis field, Sande Roberts, MA, wrote the book “We Need to Talk About Suicide.” Roberts’ passion is to stop suicide, especially among the military and teens. Her workshops and trainings are highly requested by service providers and educators. Frequently requested programs include the topics: Suicide Prevention for Military, Police, Fire and Football, and Ten Things Every Parent Needs to Know About Teen Suicide.
“We Need to Talk About Suicide” is a virtual ride along for readers through Roberts’ years working with teens, military personnel and others who might be struggling with suicidal thoughts or trying to help someone they are worried about.
In her informational workshops, Roberts goes several steps further than the standard do’s and don’ts and shares how to connect with people while they are in crisis. She also shows how to use relaxation techniques to defuse the fight or flight reaction of PTSD.
According to Karl Clark, Colonel, U.S. Army, (Ret.) “The battleground of adapting to the ‘real world’ for our profusion of warriors coming home with physical and mental disabilities is consuming their families. ‘We Need to Talk About Suicide’ is the first responder to preserving our greatest treasure, our loved ones.”
Mary Miscisin, MS, Author of Personality Lingo said, “’We Need to Talk About Suicide’ offers us an opportunity to shake off our hesitations and prepare ourselves. It provides the tools to alert us to the critical signs of impending suicide and take action in the moments of chaos when a loved one’s life hangs in the balance.”
Roberts has a master’s degree in psychology and is certified by the State of California Department of Mental Health as a master trainer in suicide prevention and intervention. Roberts spent many years working with high-risk teens and families, including implementing prevention programs for middle schools and high schools. Roberts is adjunct faculty in the psychology department at Phoenix College, Phoenix, Arizona.
For the past two years Roberts has committed significant time as a trainer for The Ripple Effect, an Arizona non-profit committed to preventing suicide among Veterans. The Ripple Effect helps Veterans and their families heal by providing community awareness through a variety of venues including the Maricopa Community College District, Arizona State University, and by providing training and support services through their Veteran Mentor program, along with collaborative relationships with other Veteran service providers.
