Mississippi Gravel Pit Incident Cues Construction Accident Lawyer Response

June 20, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com’s Thomas Moverman responded to a recent development in California, following a deadly June 1st steel beam incident. Moverman sends his condolences to the family of the fallen construction worker and commended the effort of emergency responders, and co-workers who attempted to assist the victim. Moverman also indicated that the implementation of further safety procedures is essential to the future of U.S. construction safety.

As detailed in a local report from SFGate.com, a 36-year-old construction worker was crushed by a steel beam, during the demolition of a structure following the BottleRock festival. The Sonoma man was breaking down an A-frame tent that was part of the structure making up the festival’s VIP lounge when an arch fell striking the man. Paramedics rushed the victim to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, where he was sadly pronounced dead by doctors. Cal/OSHA investigators will be conducting a formal investigation to determine if any regulations were violated.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) is a federally mandated agency that is tasked with the tremendous challenge of inspecting over 8 million worksites across the United States. Federal OSHA has 10 regional offices, and local-area offices can be found in 90 locations across the U.S. OSHA indicated that the four leading causes of construction worker deaths, often referred to as the ‘Fatal Four,’were responsible for the deaths of more than 500 workers in 2014.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that the third leading cause of death for construction workers in 2014, was individuals being struck by objects or equipment, which was the case in Napa. In 2014, there were 73 individuals who were fatally wounded after being struck by objects or equipment, equating to over 8 % of all construction work-related fatalities.
