Mississippi Startups Represented on Capitol Hill

Pearlbend Ventures and Mantle. Send Partner to Advocate on Behalf of Net Neutrality

Mississippi technology startups have plenty of hurdles in competing with the rest of the country and don’t need more by rolling back net neutrality. That is the message that Pearlbend Ventures and Mantle. representative Aaron Vick took to Capitol Hill this week.

Vick, representing Mississippi, was one of several entrepreneurs and startup support professionals from Arizona, the District of Columbia, Louisiana, Tennessee, Maryland, New York and North Dakota to take the pro-net-neutrality message to the nation’s lawmakers. The group was assembled by Engine, a policy, advocacy, and research organization supporting startups as an engine for economic growth.

“I was honored to join like-minded entrepreneurs along with Engine to represent Mississippi’s startup community on Capitol Hill,” says Vick. “An open internet levels the playing field for small businesses and promotes growth in the U.S. between the two coasts. Pearlbend Ventures believes strongly that the technology economy can grow in places other than Silicon Valley and the Northeast Corridor. However, fragile startups need equal access to tools like the internet and strong policies like net neutrality to make sure that a Mississippi startup can afford to be the next Facebook, Snap or Netflix.”

The collection of startup professionals visited with senators and representatives from both sides of the aisle, including the office of Mississippi’s Rep. Gregg Harper. Vick and the Engine group delivered a message of urgency when it comes to creating policies on a national level that will help grow startups and create new jobs in Mississippi, including maintaining the strong and fair net neutrality rules currently in place.

Vick’s trip to Washington is a continuation of Pearlbend Ventures and Mantle.’s advocacy on behalf of net neutrality and other policies such as an extension of the entrepreneur visa and some kind of baseline health care that can free entrepreneurs to pursue ventures free from the constraints of an employer-based system.
