Fort Worth small group business health insurance participants are likely to be eligible to pursue additional experimental health treatments under new legislation expected to pass.

Participants in Fort Worth small group health insurance plans will be given the chance to participate more in experimental treatment programs. The new Right to Try Act that is expected to pass Congress and earn President Trump’s signature will allow terminally ill patients to enroll in experimental programs that are not FDA approved.

Advocates for the legislation believe this will provide additional avenues of hope for patients who are not eligible for existing programs. Also, they believe the current FDA processes for enrollment are tedious and time-consuming leading to people becoming discouraged and failing to sign up. Currently, patients are allowed to apply for FDA-approved experimental trials which are called “expanded access or compassionate use” programs.

Many plans for group business health insurance in Fort Worth have included these provisions for their members. But now those who suffer from life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and have tried traditional treatments may have additional options. Data from a recent study seems to indicate more health insurance consumers are interested in experimental treatments.

Nevertheless, there will be challenges that The Right To Try Act will most certainly face. To begin, the safety and availability of experimental drugs utilized in trials. Presently, prescription drugs must be approved by the FDA and a physician that it is safe and appropriate. Very little is known about many of the drugs and protocols used in non-FDA trials. The new legislation does not require cooperation from drug manufacturers.

Concern has also been raised about the very definition of eligibility. “Life-threatening diseases and conditions” could include patients suffering from diabetes and heart health and would be allowed to participate through Right To Try. Many health advocates believe more conservative treatments should be used such as diet changes and exercise and a distinction is required from “terminally ill” patients. Health insurance professionals have already begun to communicate the likely changes to their clients. “The Right To Try Act may offer some positive options for many people but the federal government needs to play an enormous role in mitigating abuse to protect those who are really desperate and vulnerable” states Rick Thornton, a Fort Worth small group business health insurance agent.
