Everyone wants the best for their pets, and people are reconsidering who watches out for their furry companions while away, and are trading the boarding facilities for local pet-sitters.

More People are Vacationing This Year and Turning to Pet-sitters

MINNEAPOLIS, May 18, 2017 – A recently released AAA survey showed that 2017 will be a busy year for travel. Nearly one-third of American adults said they’re more likely to take a vacation this year as compared to 2016. With 53 percent of Minnesota households owning a pet, these vacationers will be looking for a trustworthy person to watch fido while they’re traveling.

Choosing the right pet sitter is crucial to protecting a pet’s well-being and safety, as well as the security of a home. Therefore, it’s important to find a professional pet sitter that will protect both the home and pet from any liabilities.

Pet sitting companies around the state are providing clients with the reassurance they need to leave town without stressing about their pet.

“Unless your pet sitter is licensed, bonded, insured and registered, you, your pet and your home are left unprotected,” says Linda Deml-Drahota, owner of Whiskers to Tails Petsitting. “In addition, ‘hobby’ pet sitters don’t have the means necessary to provide all the extra benefits and care that a professional company provides.”

Trusting a Company to Protect a Pet

There’s no doubting the value in a pet sitting company offering insurance and bonds. This protects a home against any damages that may occur while someone from the company performs pet sitting in a client’s home or property.

Many professional companies also require background checks and in-depth vetting processes on all of their pet sitters. This ensures that anyone with a questionable background will never be in care of a pet or home.

Some pet sitting companies go beyond the traditional pet sitting services, by offering to bring in mail, care for plants, and put out garbage to make sure a home is still cared for while the owners are out of town.

To Board or Not to Board?

Kennelling or boarding pets still remains a popular choice among pet owners, however it may not be in their best interest. Normally, kennels are a stressful environment for those pets used to the comfort of their own home. Not to mention some also can be a breeding ground for contagious diseases.

A professional pet sitter that does home visits provides one-on-one attention to the pet, rather than it being neglected in a boarding facility, or left to a sitter that has other priorities.

“While some pets can cope with boarding facilities, many do not and are turned away because they fail to pass a compatibility test,” said Deml-Drahota. “Additionally, boarding facilities aren’t as equipped to help those pets that suffer from existing medical ailments, separation and anxiety issues, or old age.”
