Multifocal Contact Lenses To Help Nearsighted Children

To combat worsening vision in Loveland’s school-age youth, a local optometrist, Dr. Kenneth Van Amerongen of Van’s Eyecare, is offering a half-price eye exam and contact lens fitting for nearsighted children during school holidays such as Spring Break this March.

Loveland optometrist, Dr. Ken Van Amerongen, knows that nearsightedness (myopia) in a child gets progressively worse year-by-year and he wants to do something about it. “Myopia progression can be slowed by the daytime use of multifocal soft contact lenses,” Dr. Van, as he is called, says. “I want to encourage parents to switch their children from eyeglasses to these special contact lenses, so we are making the eye clinic available when school’s out and at a discounted price.”

Dr. Van adds that more daylight and outdoor playtime, plus less exposure to handheld electronic devices, are additional factors that help a nearsighted child slow myopia progression.

Children and teens can comfortably wear the special soft contact lenses. Dr. Van believes nearsighted school children as young as eight years old can benefit. Teenagers and young athletes often prefer not to wear eyeglasses, so they may be eager to use contacts for myopia control.

Plus, the switch can help prevent severe myopia down the road. Some sufferers of nearsightedness will see their vision loss level off in their 20s. Others, however, continue to lose vision and suffer more serious visual consequences later in life.

To slow your nearsighted child’s worsening vision, start with an eye exam by a qualified eye care practitioner. At Van’s Eyecare in Loveland, a comprehensive eye exam and contact lens fitting are only $75 during Van’s special Spring Break event. The cost is usually $155.

A contact lens fitting involves measuring the corneal curvature of the eye and then placing a trial lens on the eye to determine optimal fit. Next, Dr. Van checks visual acuity to assure the best vision possible. Finally, unlimited follow-up appointments will ensure the child’s positive experience with contact lenses.

Dr. Van Amerongen is confident this protocol will be effective for most nearsighted children. Multifocal soft contacts are special lenses that have different powers in different zones of the lens and offer improvement for many vision conditions. Because of this, researchers and eye doctors discovered that these lenses are effective tools for myopia control in children.

For example, in a 2010 study, 65 children wore experimental myopia control contact lenses and 50 children wore eyeglasses. After six months, the children wearing the multifocal contact lenses had 54 percent less progression of their myopia than the children wearing eyeglasses. This led to further research. As of 2016, 2.1 million people were involved in more than 145 studies, the results of which encourage the use of multifocal soft contact lenses for a child’s myopia control.
