National Consumers League Statement, Prompts Comments From Construction Accident Lawyer

June 19, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com’s Thomas Moverman responded to the National Consumers League list of the top 5 most dangerous summer work for teens, which included construction jobs. Attorney Moverman continues to urge lawmakers, federal regulators and the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) to revise the current construction safety rules and regulations, and to consider implementing additional construction safety precautions.

As reported by the National Consumers League (NCL), construction and height work is among the top 5 most dangerous jobs for teens in the summer of 2016. The NCL provides this annual update in an attempt to help teenagers and their parents select the best possible summer job, and to maximize awareness of potential job dangers. Construction, height work, and use of heavy machinery, make construction-related jobs especially dangerous for teens, who are generally less experienced than the average worker in any field.

OSHA is a federally mandated agency that is responsible for the health and safety of nearly 130 million U.S. workers. Federal OSHA has 10 regional offices and 90 local area offices. OSHA concluded that in 2014 there were nearly 900 fatalities in the construction industry, which made up nearly 20 % of the total fatalities for the calendar year.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicate that nearly 58 percent of construction worker fatalities occurred as a result of the ‘Fatal Four.’ Construction’s ‘Fatal Four’ includes fatalities from falls, electrocutions, individuals being struck by objects or being caught between equipment or objects. The leading cause of construction worker deaths in 2014 was falls, which took the lives of over 350 workers in 2014, making up nearly 40 % of all construction worker fatalities.
