In an effort to improve the quality of healthcare available to Native American peoples, Capacity Builders works with Navajo and other communities and tribes through direct and indirect intervention programs. The Insure Kids Now initiative by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services operates the Connecting Kids to Coverage Outreach program that promotes enrollment from Native American communities.
Connecting Kids to Coverage is an initiative that helps Native American families who earn a weekly income of at least $888 a week and are registered under Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The program provides free and low-cost health insurance for children, teenagers, and their parents. Significant coverage areas include hospital visits, dental care, health check-ups, mental healthcare, and prescription medication.
The program is designed to supplement Native American health insurance exemptions and coverage by the Indian Health Service, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that administers healthcare for Native American communities.
According to a spokesperson for Capacity Builders, “We believe that the Connecting Kids to Coverage outreach program is an important step towards providing affordable healthcare to the Diné and other communities. In keeping with our mission to improve the quality of life of Native American youth and families, we believe that the program will enable children to have access to improved healthcare.”
Enrollment for Connecting Kids to Coverage for qualifying families will be conducted at Capacity Builders offices, schools, hospitals, and homes.
Founded in 1995, Capacity Builders is a nonprofit administered by a Native American management that supports other deserving nonprofits working among Native Americans through training, pregnancy prevention initiatives, academic programs, as well as drug and alcohol abuse avoidance programs.
