According to a company spokesperson, the company created Nerdtopia as a tribute to the team—the game’s avatars mimic the creators and their hard work. His company, Egg Roll Digital Studios, Inc. (ERDS), was initially founded to create more technology job opportunities in New Brunswick, Canada, a region that suffers from high unemployment—especially for college graduates. Although the ERDS team has spent over four years in the video game industry, Nerdtopia is the team’s last attempt at staying in the competitive game industry.

At this time, the ERDS team has taken its project to Indiegogo, where it seeks the necessary funds to finish production on the game and bring it to the masses. The money raised will also contribute to the ERDS team’s payroll and extending its runway to continue production and update the game. In exchange for the public’s support, White and his team are offering donors the chance to become Nerdtopia characters as well as sketches, cameos, and more.

“We really value our team, and we made the choice not to lay anyone off – which could have extended our runway for half the team for an extra month,” said White.

“Instead, we decided that we all cross-the finish line together. We hope you will be a part of our ‘Final Fantasy’—those guys have a great story about being in a similar situation—and help us afford the opportunity to continue contributing to our community.”
