New Forecast Center Reports Suggest Exciting Rafting in Utah This Summer

SALT LAKE CITY – January 24, 2017 /MarketersMedia/

Major winter storms make for exciting summertime rafting in Utah. A Colorado River Basin Forecast Center report released on January 16 suggests that this summer could be one of the best in many years.

Thanks to a series of storms that pummeled Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming with snow in recent weeks, the center’s latest model projects that summertime water volume on the Green River in Utah will be nearly one-third above average levels. Volume on the Colorado River near Cisco, Utah, is expected to range anywhere from 10 to 30 percent above historical norms.

“Every winter, we in the rafting industry keep a very close eye on snow pack levels and the projections turned out by the Colorado River Basin Forecast Center,” said Colorado River & Trail Expeditions guide and owner Walker Mackay, “Current levels of snow pack are some of the most promising any of us have seen in decades. For those dreaming of Desolation or Cataract Canyon Rafting Trips, this summer is likely to be one of the best yet and for a long time to come. We here at Colorado River & Trail Expeditions love rafting ourselves, and we’ve rarely been this excited about an upcoming season.”

Covering nearly a quarter of a million square miles, the drainage basin that feeds the Colorado River stretches across seven different Western states. Every year, as accumulated snow melts in the Rocky Mountains, the water streaming down their slopes flows into the Colorado and its tributaries before passing through the Grand Canyon on its way to the Gulf of California.

Of the many dramatic features along the way, Cataract Canyon in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park is a favorite among whitewater rafters. Beginning where the Green River empties into the Colorado, Cataract Canyon features rapids that exceed in size the largest in the Grand Canyon when flow rates rise above 40,000 cubic feet per second. Colorado River & Trail Expeditions currently has 3- and 4-day motorized launches scheduled for Cataract Canyon throughout May and June, when flows are expected to peak, and 6-day oar-powered trips planned for July and August.

Another popular choice for summertime whitewater rafting in Utah is the Green River’s Desolation Canyon. With more but smaller rapids than Cataract Canyon, Desolation offers rafters dramatic views of unspoiled wilderness and plenty of excitement of its own, while being more accessible to multi-generational groups and families.

For over forty-five years, Colorado River & Trail Expeditions has been guiding licensed rafting trips through spectacular places like these, the Grand Canyon, and others. With this summer’s whitewater rafting in Utah now projected to be some of the best in many years, visitors can learn more about the company’s Desolation and Cataracts Canyon Rafting Trips at the Colorado River & Trail Expeditions website, where reservations for 2017 trips are now being accepted.
