January 10, 2018 – Researching data for plant hardiness is set to get a lot easier for both amateur and expert gardeners following the launch of the Global USDA Plant Hardiness mobile app.

Plant hardiness is the ability of a plant to survive adverse growing conditions such as cold, heat, drought. In 1960, the USDA developed a hardiness zoning system which has been adapted by several countries around the world.

Until now, researching plant hardiness meant researching the climate zone and then exploring databases to find the plant zone. This is often a long and tedious process. But thanks to this new gardening app researching plant hardiness is now as easy as 1-2-3. All that is required is for the budding gardener or expert to enter their country, zip code or city closest to them, the genus of the plant they want to grow and the species. The plant hardiness tool then automatically maps the user’s climate zone and compares it to an extensive list of species to determine the hardiness of the plant in the selected area.

More than 50 countries and about 30,000 species of plants are featured in the plant hardiness database. This makes it the largest resource for processing hardiness data. The developers are already planning to add more species and to supplement data such as the preferred soil condition, sun exposure, moisture requirement etc.

The Plant Hardiness Checker tool and Mobile App is the brainchild of Bio Scientist and Entrepreneur, Steffen Bauer. Bauer is the owner of Asklepios Seeds -an online shop that sells and ships seeds or rare and ornamental medicinal plants worldwide. Asklepios Seeds has been serving the gardening community since 2012. Questioned about the motivation for creating the plant hardiness checker tool and app, He explained “I often get asked from customers if a specific plant will be hardy in their area. Since I am not accustomed to their location, I then have to research their zone and then check the plant. Customers often are confused by this process, especially if they are not from USA, since for most other countries the data for the locations aren’t as easy to find as it is for USA.

The Plant Hardiness Checker mobile app is available for free download on Apple and android devices. Official launch will be January, 14th. Online users can immediately access this time saving resource by visiting: https://www.asklepios-seeds.de/gb/usda-plant-hardiness-testing-tool
