Sommers’ sixth book, Beautiful Angels explores the complex, brutal and often beautiful world of the Middle Ages at the start of the Black Death. She observes that the story’s parallels to current threats of re-emerging virulent religious antagonism provide a historically accurate, timely reminder of the consequences of ignorance, hatred and division.

The story centers around Ugolinus (Ugo), a profane and skeptical young ward to a parish priest in a rural French community that fearfully awaits the arrival of the plague, knowing there is no explanation or remedy for the always-deadly disease. Villagers blame the town’s Jewish community for the plague’s arrival, and insist it and its occupants be burned to protect the village. While the parish priest attempts to leverage faith and his authority to mandate civility, a radical ecclesiastical faction of flagellants threatens violence and murder in the name of the Christian God. Ugo faces the choice of standing with or against the mob, which includes his own father.

Sommers is an award-winning editorial writer and columnist who has written a variety of fiction and non-fiction titles. “I am fascinated with the best and the worst of human nature’s responses to devastating situations like the Black Death, and how individuals are able to keep their values and find the best course through extraordinary difficulties,” she said. “This story is an appreciation of how individual values and character can rise above popular ignorance and prejudices.”
