New Study Reveals Whooping Cough Cases Rising As Vaccine Loses Strength

A fresh new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Protection reveals that the pre-teen whooping cough vaccine becomes less powerful over time. The CDC reminds the public that anyone can get whooping cough, but it can be very dangerous for infants and people with weakened immune systems.

Study author, Dr. Anna Acosta, an epidemiologist with the CDC, describes the findings, saying “Among adolescents, within the first year following immunization the vaccine effectiveness was 73 percent – but by two to four years out, it had fallen to about 34 percent effectiveness.”

According to statistics available at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cases of whooping cough in the United States began rising sharply in the early 2000s. The statistics speak volumes, considering that from 1979 to 2001, the maximum reported case statistic was 8,000 per year, yet in 2014 alone, cases of whooping cough exceeded a shocking 28,000.

When asked their opinion on these findings, Dr. Althouse and Dr. Scarpino revealed they are considering a newly developed theory as the possible reason for the upswing. They concluded that a switch in the vaccine, from whole-cell, which was more effective, to an acellular form, is the underlying culprit behind the recent increase of infection. They described this theory further, saying, “The vaccine complicates estimates of prevalence by hiding many infections.”

While vaccination is still the recommended best defense against whooping cough, Nora Markin, spokesperson for a popular wellness site, said “Our main goal is helping people understand that keeping their bodies and immune systems strong can work wonders for staying well and free of illness. After all, without an immune system, there would be no stopping germs and infections.

Markin continued to stress the importance of enabling the immune system to do its job by fueling it with the nutrients it needs to function properly. She explains in more detail, saying, “The body’s natural defense against disease is the immune system — that’s why this integral, life-sustaining network deserves all the support and encouragement it can get. Whether you’re already suffering from an illness or infection, or just looking to stay healthy, providing your body with naturally derived essential vitamins and antioxidants that you get from healthy foods may give your immune system the boost it needs to help redeem or maintain your good health.”
