New Study Shows Professional Images are More Likely to Get Noticed
A new study done by the National Press Photographer’s Association puts to rest the theory that anyone with a camera can get the job done.

It’s been a long held belief that anyone with a camera can take photographs that can pass for professional work. And while the world is full of photographers, both amateur and professional, a new study shows that there really is something special about a professional photographer’s work. The study, conducted by the National Press Photographer’s Association, showed overwhelmingly that people prefer photographs that are taken by professionals.
The researchers who conducted the study used one hundred photographs taken by amateurs and one hundred photographs taken by professionals, and then mixed them up. Then they presented them to people who wore sophisticated eye-tracking technology, and had agreed to take personal surveys. The purpose of the study was to determine which of the photographs held the participant’s interest, which photographs they were drawn to, and whether or not they read the captions associated with the photographs.
The participants were able to determine which photographs were taken by an amateur or a professional ninety percent of the time, and overwhelmingly preferred the professional’s work. In addition, the study participants spend more time on the professional photos, and when they were asked to list the top twenty photographs, the images they chose were all taken by a professional. The participants typically first looked at the faces in the photographs because they are interested in the relationships between the people in the frame, and they were also interested in scenes that gave them “special access” to an event or scene.
This study has huge implications for businesses that use photography in their marketing and advertising efforts. Based on the results from this study, it appears that it is no longer “good enough” to use photos taken by amateurs to promote a business. Rather, the study shows that the extra expense involved in hiring a professional photographer will catch and hold consumer’s attention faster and longer than amateur photographs.
Matthew Hesser, a photographer whose work can be seen at CaFineArtPhotos.com sums it up nicely. Its just like any other profession, he says. “When you want a product that brings results, you go to those who have been trained. You wouldn’t expect your accountant to lead your sales team, and you shouldn’t expect an amateur photographer to give you the results that a professional can.”
