New Study Uncovers the Cause Behind Heart Disease in Menopausal Women
A new study reveals the underlying cause of heart disease in menopausal women. Learn more here.
Tampa, FL, United States – July 23, 2015 /PressCable/ —
In a new study, researchers established a link between an increased amount of fat around the heart – a sign of heart disease – in post-menopausal women. This development is likely caused by a change in hormones, which could be prevented with proper treatment. Additionally, researchers believe the common weight gain seen in pre- and post-menopausal women may be due to this fluctuation in hormones, rather than aging.
The study focused on 456 women with an average age of 51 years. After studying their blood samples an CT scans of their heart, research revealed that, as concentrations of the sex hormone estradiol — the most potent estrogen — declined during menopause, greater volumes of cardiovascular fat were found.
This new discovery also helps to explain the increasing rate of heart disease, and related death, among women. The study’s lead author Samar R. El Khoudary, Ph.D., M.P.H., assistant professor in Pitt Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, said “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, and it increases after age 50 — the average age when a woman is going through menopause. By showing that menopause appears to be associated with a shift in fat deposits that leads to more fat around the heart, we’ve uncovered a new potential contributor to increased risk of cardiovascular disease in women.”
Because of the growing toll of heart disease among women, experts at Pulmin couldn’t be happier that an explanation has finally been found. When asked about this discovery, Nancy Tippen, a spokesperson for the company, said “Now that researchers and doctors finally understand a little more about what is causing this dramatic rise in heart disease among women, proper therapies to prevent damage can now be implemented. This has just put us leaps and bounds ahead of where we were before.”
