The Newark Community Economic Development Corporation, led by CFO Kevin Seawright, has partnered with NewarkWorks and a handful of fellow prominent city figures and organizations to help Newark youth secure jobs for summer 2016.

The Summer Youth Employment Plan aims to provide six weeks of paid summer work experience to Newark student residents and, in turn, boost college graduation rates in the local community. The program will include on-the-job training, empowerment lectures, financial literacy lessons, and college readiness programs.

This is the first year program applicants are required to apply online, and something Kevin Seawright feels has been a tremendous improvement to the process.

“As of Monday we had 350 youth applications already in,” said Seawright. “We have turned what is traditionally a six-week process into a 30-minute event.”

One of the goals of the 2016 program is to increase the number of student employment opportunities from the previous year’s of 3,000 jobs to 3,500 jobs. In addition to the increase in opportunities for Newark students, Seawright invested all of his efforts into partnering with two prestigious banks, Santander Bank, and TD Bank in order to provide financial literacy services to the students.

“This way, the students, and individuals can learn how to open their own checking and savings accounts,” explained Seawright. “This basic skill is the foundation for financial success both now and down the road when they graduate and enter the professional workforce.”

The program will run for six weeks beginning July 5th and run through August 16th. All program participants will pay minimum wage to their student employees.

“This is an event myself and the rest of the Newark CEDC team are really proud to be apart of,” said Kevin Seawright. “It gives us hope for the future of this incredible city.”
