NEW YORK — The National Football League will play four regular season football games at famed Wembley Stadium during the 2016 season, in a joint statement released by the NFL and its partner NFL Europe.

The Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins and the World champion Denver Broncos have agreed to play next season. It will be the Lions third trip over the Atlantic and they are 1-1 in the previous two games.

Game dates and times will be released in April along with the rest of the schedule, this information will also be available on BetOnline.
Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will make stops at popular London spots to promote the games April 26-27. More details are upcoming.

”We are pleased to expand our product into London because of the overwhelming popularity of our game,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. ”The NFL has developed a great working relationship with the London authorities and its tourism industry.

We look forward to our expanded schedule as do our players.”

London Director of Tourism Roger Johnson said the NFL has been embraced by the entire country and has enjoyed the NFL experience the past five years.

”The NFL brand continues to expand and has generated new fans across Great Britain and even into Ireland and France,” Johnson said. ”This is a great expanding partnership that will continue to grow.”

NFL games have played to an average attendance of 68,755 fans and four of the last five games played out to sold-out crowds at Wembley. The NFL began playing preseason games in London in 2002 and regular season games in 2009.

The British government estimates an economic impact of $50 million per game. Fans from the United States have planned trips to Europe around games. Games have been festive as fans wear their favorite NFL gear. In addition to games downtown NFL theme street festivals are planned with rides, street performers and nightly fireworks.

The NFL produced revenues of more than $9 billion in 2015, averaged more than 68,000 fans per game and earned more than $2 billion in profits.

There have been a number of exciting games which increase fan interest. In 2014 the Lions overcame a 21-0 deficit to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-21.

The NFL replaced Major League Baseball as America’s game and looks to expand globally because of fan interest. This is a chance to see if multiple games still draws interest. The NFL is considering plans to move into Mexico City, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, London and Paris.

London is a priority city because of the close relationship between the United States and Great Britain. The two share interest in the war on terrorism and have been allies in sports. Besides Canada and Mexico which border the United States more English fans attend NFL games than any other country.

The British also rank fourth in NFL merchandise sales. The league is also looking to expand its gift shop program into Europe, Asia and Africa.
