This is the Year for Progress, Life, and Culture of Japanese-Americans

Since 1934 The Nisei Week Japanese Festival has been a means to connect the diverse communities of Southern California by sharing the Japanese and Japanese-American heritage and traditions through arts and cultural education. This year’s theme is “Let the Good Times Roll” and is a very special year with the return of the all new, dynamic, breathtakingly colorful LED- illuminated Nebuta float in our Nisei Week Grand Parade.

The Nisei Week Festival is a significant festival to the Japanese community and traditions. English-speaking Japanese Americans celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Nisei Week Festival this year. It will be one of the biggest ethnic events to happen in United States and there will be not only Japanese-Americans in attendance but many other non-Japanese will be there to celebrate the festivities as well.

The Nisei Week Festival was first held back in 1934. It is a nine day event recognized to be the longest running ethnic festivals in US. The event will be held in various places in Los Angeles, CA including the Japanese American National Museum on Central Avenue.

The people organizing this event are part of the Nisei Week Foundation, established in 1999 and have been overseeing the event ever since. What the foundation aims with the event is to promote both Japanese and Japanese American heritage. Additionally, the foundation also wants to promote Japanese culture by means of arts, tradition and education so as to bring together the diverse Japanese communities in Southern California.

The Nisei Week Festival for this year is happening from August 9th to 18th, 2015. The events will be mostly held in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. Events to happen in the festival include Nisei Week Baby Show, Nisei Week Japanese Festival / Festival at JACCC, Nisei Week Rubik’s Cube Open, Grand Parade, and more. In all of these events, there will be cultural exhibits, martial arts and musical performances, children’s activities, food and drinks, outdoor entertainment and more that people can enjoy.

For participants to enjoy this incredible experience during the festival, it is recommended to take the time and effort to plan well. Planning for the trip is critical in order to get around to the many events crammed within just two weeks. Most of the events are open to the general public, but there are also some that private and by invitation only.

The 75th Anniversary Japanese-American Festival of Nisei Week is an event many people have been anticipating all year. People can expect big crowds and difficult parking even more so than past Nisei Week Festivals. If planning to participate in any of the events it is recommended first visiting this Nisei Week information page for more on the event. This way, being familiar with the festival events, the hassles of parking can be avoided.
