Network equipment maker Ericsson recently released a report showing that worldwide data usage increased by 60% in the first quarter of this year compared to this same time last year. It’s a massive increase, but one that is in line with the trend over the past few years. “With a figure like 60%, it certainly does seem like an astronomical climb in mobile data usage,” says Paul Romanenko, owner and CEO of Ohming Technology. “But when you think about how much people are using their cell phones to do just about everything possible, then you understand why these numbers continue to escalate year after year.”

Leading the charge for data consumption are video, social media activity, and audio streaming. Ericsson predicts this traffic will grow to 12 times its current amount by the year 2021. Just five years ago, there was a third of the traffic there is now.

“Carriers better get ready because data usage through cell phones is just getting started,” Romanenko continues. “It’s going to be incredible to watch how these networks manage all this data usage and what that means for consumers.”

Not surprisingly, North Americans consume the most data with an average of 4 gigabytes per month, per phone. Ericsson also sees 5G taking over within the next decade, replacing the current 4G mobile network technology.
