On September 29th, 2018, a class of fifth grade students from the Norman, OK was on a trip to visit Seaworld San Antonio in South Central Texas. What should have been an amazing, fun experience for the children suddenly turned into a disaster.

The bus was traveling down Highway 281 in rural Lampasas County, a little more than three hours away from their final destination. In an instant, the bus was involved in a single vehicle rollover accident. It was raining at the time of the accident.

According to information provided by the Texas Department of Public Safety, early reports suggest that the bus hydroplaned from the back end. When the driver attempted to correct the steering of the vehicle, the bus was unable to regain stability and it rolled over.

There were 24 young students and 3 teachers on the bus at the time of the accident. All of the students were female. A separate bus for the male students was not involved in any incident and turned around to take the children back home to Oklahoma.

Thankfully, no one was killed in the accident and no victims are believed to have life-threatening injuries. However, all 27 passengers were transported to local emergency medical centers for evaluation. According to reporting from Oklahoma News 4, many of the injured students are still recovering from the crash. Indeed, at least three students were still hospitalized one week after the wreck.

According to Tulsa bus accident attorney Charles Bryan Alred, “When bus accidents occur, the consequences can be truly devastating. When children are involved — whether on a school bus or a commercial bus — this situation is all the more frightening. It is crucial that bus operators take all necessary safety measures to ensure that they are doing absolutely everything they can to protect the health and well being of passengers.”

Officials from the Norman Public School District issued a statement thanking emergency first responders and medical professionals for their efforts. They were able to take quick action and keep a terrible situation from becoming even worse. Representatives also stated that they will continue to monitor the health and recovery status of every student who was injured in the crash.
