Orange County Man Seeks Lawsuit After Losing An Eye In E-Cigarette Explosion

May 23, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on a recent e-cigarette explosion that cost an Orange County man his left eye. According to a report by ABC7, a 63-year-old Orange County man now wears a black patch over his eye after he sat his e-cigarette down and it exploded. According to the report, the explosion started a fire in the man’s home and sent pieces of metal flying at the man’s face, causing facial fractures. His wife then put out the fire and rushed him to the hospital. The man’s attorney plans to file a lawsuit.

Similar cases have been reported recently concerning the dangers of exploding e-cigarettes. Other cases that also involved an e-cigarette user suffering from blindness or loss of an eye have been reported in places including North Carolina and New York. The North Carolina man suffered serious injuries after the e-cigarette exploded while he was in the car. In New York, a 14-year-old boy was blinded in one eye when his exploded during a trial at a mall kiosk.

Though FEMA reported in 2014 that 25 incidents involving exploding cigarettes had been reported by mainstream media between 2009 and 2014, they stated that they expect the number to be much higher given the unknown amount of cases that have not been reported. When the devices explode, they often ignite surrounding items, causing fires that can quickly spread. In addition, pieces of the device can break off in the initial explosion, becoming projectile and possibly causing injury to the user or others.
