Greeley, United States – October 12, 2017 /PressCable/

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church will be holding its 90th anniversary celebration at 1800 21st Avenue in Greeley, Colorado on October 15, 2017. The celebration slogan is “Looking Back and Moving Forward…Go and Make Disciples”. The worship services will be at 8:15 and 10:40 am with Bishop Jim Gonia of the Rocky Mountain Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) preaching and Rev. Warren Salveson presiding. A special celebration program will be held at 9:30 am in the church’s Fellowship Hall with a potluck at 11:45 am. The public is invited to attend.

Founded in 1927, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church was started by a small group of Greeley citizens, mainly of German and German-Russian descent. They wanted to start a Lutheran Church where the services would be held in English instead of German. The church had two homes in its first 18 years of service. The first was the Bungalow Chapel, dedicated in May 1929, that seated about 100 people. By 1935, the congregation had outgrown the small chapel and built a Spanish style mission building on the corner of 8th Avenue and 21st Street.

In December 1953, the congregation voted to purchase land at 21st Avenue and 18th Street, the church’s current location. Groundbreaking of the building took place on April 7, 1957 with Dedication Sunday held May 18, 1958. An Early Childhood Center became an outreach for Our Savior’s in 1975. The school maintains a fine reputation which incorporates Christian education principles while providing early learning experiences through self-discovery, a stimulating environment and play. It is a cooperative school involving parents in the program. Additional space for administrative offices and classrooms was added in 1991 extending the church building to the east and south from the original structure.

In the late 1960’s, the congregation approved the purchase of a Layton Pipe Organ which was installed in January 1967. The organ had a highly anticipated renovation in 2015 and is a source of great musical joy for all occasions. In 2016, the church sanctuary underwent a significant remodel resulting in a beautiful worship space.

Over the years, community members are drawn to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church by wonderful programs such as Vacation Bible School, Lenten worship services, Thanksgiving worship, Sunday school, German Christmas Songfest, Christmas programs, Choir and the hand bell group Ringers of Praise.

Our Savior’s has had quite a few pastors pass through its doors. The ministry team has included many associate ministers as well as intern pastors. The pastors who have served at Our Savior’s are: Dr. Edwin G. Frischel (1927-1945), Eric A. Biedermann (1945-1948), Samuel F. Wegenast (1948-1957), Richard Bunge (1957-1970), James Keller (1971-1980), Warren Salveson (1980-2001), Matt Bersagel (1998-2011), Sarah Moening (2012) and John Knutson (2012-Present).
