The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just released their list of worst sunscreens and many are brands that can be seen on the shelves of major retailers every day. Many parent are continuing to use these brands without any awareness of just how hazardous they really are.
One major brand earned the title of “worst sunscreen” containing oxybenzone which can act as an estrogen hormone mimic. Oxybenzone in sunscreens is easily absorbed through the skin and entering the bloodstream.
Another hazardous ingredient found in the same major brand sunscreen and many other sunscreens on the list is retinyl palmitate a form of vitamin A which might sound safe and healthy but on skin exposed to the sun government studies have shown it can speed the growth of skin tumours and lesions.
The report highlights brands of spray on sunscreens which are a poor choice of sunscreen because they pose serious risk of inhalation and they make it too easy to apply the sunscreen too lightly for it to be effective.
12 sunscreen lotions also make this list, many because they have high SPF ratings which measures the protection from UVB radiation that burns the skin but doesn’t measure protection from more hazardous UVA rays which penetrate deep into the skin, accelerate skin aging, suppress the immune system and can cause skin cancer.
People using sunscreens with high SPF ratings can be fooled into thinking they have protection because the top layer of their skin isn’t burning when much deeper and more serious long term damage is taking place.
The most alarming sunscreens on the list are the 11 worst sunscreens for kids. Many of the most popular sunscreen brands for children came out with poor ratings in the Environmental Working Group study and parents trying to do the right thing protecting their children are often choosing sunscreens that fall short of the protection their children need.
The report also includes practical tips on sun protection and a list of sunscreens that come highly recommended for their combination of high protection and safe ingredients.
