Phoenix Attorney Jeffrey Phillips Investigating Claims By Individuals Injured By Onglyza

PHOENIX, AZ / ACCESSWIRE / July 30, 2015 / Attorney Jeffrey Phillips of Phillips Law in Phoenix, AZ, has begun investigating claims by individuals who were injured by the use of the drug Onglyza. Onglyza is an oral diabetes drug for use by people with type 2 diabetes. The medicine helps to control blood sugar levels by regulating insulin levels produced by the body after eating. The FDA issued new warnings for Onglyza recently, stating that they are now aware the drug may increase a user’s risk for heart disease. Phillips Law is assisting those who have experienced heart attack or heart failure after being prescribed and properly taking Onglyza.

“An FDA advisory committee has voted to update the label of the drug to reflect new information regarding cardiovascular outcome studies,” states Phillips. Out of 15 panelists, 14 voted to update the warning label of Onglyza to warn patients about the increased risk of heart failure, due to studies done on the serious effects of the medication.

Onglyza belongs to a class of medications known as incretin mimetics. Januvia, the first drug from the same class, is now listed on the Do Not Use list by the FDA. Galvus, another drug in the class, was rejected by the FDA as well, due to concerns about severe allergic reactions such as Stevens Johnson Syndrome and liver toxicity. A public citizen’s group noted that the drug, although designed only for maintaining blood sugar levels in those with type 2 diabetes, may have been confused as to what it can do. Larry Olson of the citizens group stated, “Some people may have believed that it would also decrease their risk of heart attack and stroke, while the exact opposite has proven to be true.” Other serious side effects that have been noted by the FDA include pancreatitis, thyroid and pancreatic cancer, and renal failure.
