Plaintiff Had Type II Diabetes Drug Invokana Side Effects Including Ketoacidosis, Leading to Lawsuit Filing

April 24, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a complaint filed against Johnson & Johnson, a subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The case (1:15-cv-00636), filed in the Southern District of Alabama, states that the plaintiff, had taken Type II Diabetes drug Invokana and suffered from side effects she attributes to the drug, including ketoacidosis, which can be life-threatening. The patient claims she took the drug in December 2014 and quickly became ill. Diagnosed with ketoacidosis, she claims it was a direct result of the drug she had just started taking as treatment for her condition as a method of better controlling her blood sugar levels.

Ketoacidosis is a condition which occurs when excess acid gets into the bloodstream. The condition can come on very quickly within just 24 hours and can result in coma or death. This is why it is essential that treatment be carried out as quickly as possible. The FDA has, upon receiving the reports from patients suffering with ketoacidosis after taking Invokana, released a statement asking patients to be aware of the potential for development of the condition. They have released a series of potential symptoms which could include nausea and vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion or abdominal pain as well as excessive thirst and frequent urination and asked that patients be mindful of these symptoms. Vigilance on the part of patients is essential to keeping them safe.

The plaintiff in this particular case states that she was not made aware of the potential for development of ketoacidosis; however she claims that the company would have known about the potential as a result of clinical trials. As a result, her lawsuit alleges that Janssen Pharmaceuticals has behaved in a negligent fashion by not informing their patients of the potential side effects of the drug in question prior to their taking it. The FDA has issued a notice to the company which requires them to notify patients of the potential link and to ensure that all patients are fully aware of possible danger.
