Four years ago, PlantSnap began as an idea: Eric Ralls, the CEO of GreenAtom, was walking through a friend’s backyard and discovered a plant he wished to know the identity of—but he did not have the technology available to readily classify it. Thus, the PlantSnap idea was born: the mobile app lets users take pictures of leaves and flowers, and the app displays the most probable species and relevant scientific information about the plant. In a recent test, PlantSnap’s developers tried the classifier on a selection of leaves and flowers, and its algorithm was able to detect most species with 100-percent accuracy.

At this time, GreenAtom has taken its project to Kickstarter, where it seeks the necessary funds to bring PlantSnap to mobile users everywhere. The team is offering a wide number of perks in exchange for the public’s support, such as free app downloads, beta testing opportunities, gear, and a hiking trip. The GreenAtom team currently has a beta version of PlantSnap and is still updating the app with more species and information.

“We have already proven the concept of the application and developed a beta version, so we know that the technology is there to complete the project,” said a representative of the PlantSnap project. “The challenge will be adapting the image recognition platform to recognize different shapes and sizes of the same plants, flowers and trees.
